Chapter

Thirteen

Some women might have fainted in shock. Gasped. Freaked the fuck out at hearing her ex-boyfriend killed someone and threatened his own father.

Me?

It took everything I had to restrain myself from throwing myself at him for a really tongue-filled kiss.

I reminded myself I still hated Axel, even as the story of our breakup took an unexpected twist.

Rather than embarrass myself, I clapped. “Bravo. Epic story. You almost had me believing it.”

Axel frowned. “It’s the truth.”

“According to you. But excuse me if I call bullshit. You loved me so much you walked away. Loved me so much you didn’t visit me in the hospital after I almost died. Loved me so much you never once fucking called, sent a postcard, nothing!” I was shouting by now.

“To keep you safe.”

I jabbed him in the chest. “I was safe. When you were with me. But you left, and I was alone. Alone when that bitch attacked me. Alone when the doctors told me I’d never have kids because a psycho gutted me. Alone after my parents died in that crash. Alone when the drought hit and I was hand watering my crops. Alone every night because you lacked the balls to stay by my side.” The rant expelled from me in increasing decibels until I heaved with exertion.

His jaw tightened. “I was trying to spare you.”

“Bull shit.”

“Fine, the truth was I couldn’t face you. Couldn’t face what I caused to happen to the person I loved most in the world. And I’m sorry for that. More than you could ever know.”

“Blah. Blah. Blah.” I made a talking gesture with my hand, and inside I simmered. My rage had taken a different turn but was still as intense. “The truth is, if you loved me, you wouldn’t have left.”

We might have argued some more about it, but Jilly chose that moment to canter into the kitchen and halted at the sight of Axel. Her nose twitched.

His did, too, which was admittedly weird to see.

“What the fuck is that?” he asked, pointing to my sweet goat.

“Jilly. My pet. Not a snack, in case your furry ass is thinking of taking a bite.” That earned me a glare.

“What is she?”

“Pygmy goat.”

“That’s not a goat.” He sounded quite certain.

“Yeah, she is, with a few messed-up chromosomes, as you can see by her horn.”

“She doesn’t smell right.”

“You don’t smell right,” I chided as my goat sidled sideways to hide behind me. “She’s delicate and sweet, and how dare you try and make her feel bad!”

“How long have you had her?”

“Long enough to know she’s not the reason for your stupid lights in the sky.”

“They’re not stupid,” he muttered. “Yvonne says—”

“Yvonne can kiss my ass.” She could also kiss my fist. Did she see that in her future? Was it even possible to hit someone who could predict your every move?

“You’re being childish.”

“Actually, it’s called bitchy. Stubborn with a hint of asshole. If you don’t like it, leave.”

His lips flattened. “Beginning to see why you remained single.”

“I’m not single. How funny you blocked out my boyfriend from your mind.
